Managing Your Embarrassment

< BACK

During your assessment, the doctor may establish that your pelvic floor muscles are weak, but intact.  This means that, with hard work and dedication from your side, there is hope to get better control.

The corner stone of your treatment is pelvic floor strengthening and biofeedback, which are demonstrated to you by your Pelvic Floor Physiotherapist.

You will have better control with a formed, bulky stool, for that reason we prescribed Normacol and Loperamide.  Normacol will bulk up the stool, but could lead to more and softer stools. Therefore we need to slow your colon down with loperamide.

Each person’s system responds differently to these medications.  Therefore we start with the dose prescribed, but ultimately you will have to find the dosages that works for you.  If you become too constipated, use less of the loperamide.  If the stools are small and hard, add more Normacol.

With a bit of experimentation, hard work and dedication, you will be able to get back the control that will give you confidence to have your life back!

Important Information

  • Use Normacol, not Normacol Plus
  • Loperamide as a number of trade names and generics, all are equally effective
  • The aim is to achieve continence to stools, you will probably still struggle with control of winds
