Major surgery is a big stressor for the body. Just as an athlete trains for a big event, you can prepare for the operation. Studies have shown that people who have improved their fitness and nutrition before surgery do better, recover faster and have fewer complications than those who do not.
Prehabilitation includes:
- Correcting pre-existing deficiencies (like anaemia)
- Daily exercise program
- High protein diet
- Stop smoking and alcohol
Correcting deficiencies
Blood tests and scans will be done as part of the diagnosis and work-up for your surgery. If deficiencies are found with these tests, it will have to be corrected.
Daily exercise
You need to do exercise of at least 20 to 30 minutes, every day to the day before your surgery.
The aim is to get your heart rate increased and your muscles to work to the maximum of your ability. No specific exercise is better than another. If you would prefer guidance, we can refer you to a bioethicist. Alternatively, or use Pinterest.com or other online platforms for a program that will suit your environment and circumstances.
High protein diet
Increase protein in your diet by adding foods like:
- Eggs, fish, tuna, lean beef, chicken, almonds, milk, broccoli, oats, pumpkin seeds, and peanuts
- Whey protein supplements like Futurelife High Protein or Nutritech Whey Protein
Smoking and Alcohol
Smoking significantly increases risk of all complications related to colon surgery, including lung problems, wound infection, and anastomotic leak (breakdown of the join). By stopping for 2 weeks before and 6 weeks after surgery, you could decrease chances for complications significantly.
Excluding alcohol for 2 weeks before the operation also significantly reduces risks of complications
Complications around colorectal surgery are associated with longer recovery, poorer quality of life and potentially worse long-term outcomes. By doing your part, you can significantly reduce the chance of complications. Use the days before the surgery to prepare yourself for the best chance to a successful outcome!
