Anal fissure and a few other painful conditions of the anus improve when the anal muscles can be relaxed. Permanent relaxation of the anal muscles can lead to permanent incontinence; therefore temporary relaxation with medications is often preferred. How does ECB cream work?
Nitrate paste is a smooth muscle (non-voluntary muscle) relaxer. This means that it will help the internal anal muscle to relax. This improves blood flow to the lining (mucosa) of the anal canal, which in turn improves healing.
Protect your finger
Nitrate is absorbed directly through the skin. To avoid absorption through the skin of the finger, it is important to cover the finger with a barrier. Cling wrap can be used, but many patients find using a glove easier. I suggest you buy a box of non-sterile gloves with your script.
Put it where it matters
For the maximum effect, the Nitrate paste should be applied in the anus where the fissure is. Take a pea-sized amount of nitrate paste on your gloved finger. Place this deep in the anus, there where it hurts. This should be done 3 times a day, every day, for 6 weeks.
What are the potential side effects?
Headache is a common side effect of Nitrates. This unpleasant side effect can be avoided by using a glove and applying slightly smaller amounts of ECB cream in the anus. Two Panado’s, a few minutes before using the cream may help if headaches remains a problem, If this does not help, contact your Doctor as there are other alternatives, albeit a little more expensive.
